Witness an old fashioned couple on a rare tandem tricycle travelling in a way the aristocracy did in the 1880s, or watch penny farthings compete in a variety of races.
Vintage cars and motorbikes will also add a special touch to the fun and spectacle of Maryborough’s Mary Poppins Festival in the Park on Sunday 4 July.
Penny farthing enthusiasts will be travelling to the region to be part of the festival. Brett and Stacy Richardson who have previously attended the festival stated that "It is not often we get the chance to get the old bikes out in an atmosphere similar to their origin. Maryborough is a great backdrop for this. We also get a chance to dress up in the era and perhaps experience a small taste of what it was like at that time in history" .
Enthusiasts will also compete in a number of Penny Farthing variety races with fellow enthusiast Wayne van Wijk, including a slow race and a run, ride carry race.
Brett said riding a Penny Farthing was a challenge, and required great skill, especially in a race situation, where the bikes can reach speeds of more than 50km per hour. "The fastest I've been is 53kph.I hold the world record for 1 mile of 2 minutes 10 seconds set in 1995 on the Launceston airport. I’m not so fast these days, I just enjoy riding now," he said. |
